Hi everyone
I wanted to update you all on Mike's condition, but first I must pass along a heartfelt thank you to all who have sent e-mails, notes and calls. Michael is deeply grateful for the support and love coming his way from EFTA.
We especially loved the get well cards in the mail, as they arrived at a time when Mike was unable to talk, write or type, and really cheered him up.
Late in December Michael suffered a brain bleed and subsequent life-threatening brain swelling, both extremely dangerous and painful.
After three extremely difficult weeks, he began to get better.
He is now able to walk, can use his hand pretty well and is talking more everyday. He is doing physical and speech therapy three times a week. The progress is slow but steady. He is also working down off of no less than 9 different meds!
Although Mike was very sick, he was still the bad ass we know and love.
On the morning after the stroke, Mike realized that he could not move his wrist, hand or fingers. Desperate to make a lame joke, I said "hey you don't need the brakes anyway!!" He looked at me for a while and then mouthed the word: "DOWNHILL!!" : )
Regards
Joan Cousins

Joan,
Thank you for the update on Mike. It is very good news and I have copied your post to bring to tonights EFTA banquet for Mikes fellow racers and friends to read.
I have to add that even though Mike is a kick ass rider he is also one of the most supportive of his fellow racers. I know this 1st hand being one of the many racers who move over for the "Mikester" to speed on by and always getting a "Good Job", "Keep on pedaling" and many other incouraging words from him and believe me I've heard them all.
"Keep on truckin' Mike"
